Good News About The Russian Forests and the Environment in general.
Novoyeniseisky Sawmill (Novo/NE) is an FSC resource, certified by the Soil Association Woodmark in 2004, the internationally recognized FSC agency.

  • The total area of stocked forest land in Russia amounts to 771 million hectares, about the area of the USA - excluding Alaska.
  • During the 1980s, forest area in Russia increased by between 1 million and 2 million hectares every year. The volume of timber growing in Russia's forests amounts to 872 billion cubic metres.
  • The total available Annual Allowable Cut of Russia's forests - the volume that is currently or potentially accessible and which may be extracted each year without exceeding timber growth - amounts to 545 million cubic metres - about three times that of Canada's forests.
  • 22% of Russia's vast forest area is allocated for environmental protection where no harvesting is allowed . In addition, a further 25% of Russia's forest land may be regarded as "de facto" protected - as it is technically not suited to timber production and development is unlikely to become economically viable in the future.
  • Timber companies operating within Russia's forests are required to pay 20% of the timber value into a National Fund to cover the costs of forest regeneration, protection, infra-structure development and forestry research.
  • It is statistically proven that sustainable forestry has been practiced in Russia for many years. Today there are a number of international agencies operating in Russia as well as a National Forestry Code, all of which are at least in line with, and much of which goes beyond international sustainabile criteria.
